Assistant Professor of Military Science
Captain Alexander J. Smith is an Engineer Officer who commissioned in the United States Army in May of 2010 as a graduate from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. In July 2018, he was assigned as an Assistant Professor of Military Science at the University of California, Davis Army ROTC Program
Captain Smith’s assignments include Commander of the 561st Engineer Company “Warriors”, Battalion S4 Officer for the 84th Engineer Battalion from August 2015 to October 2016, Platoon Leader, Alpha Company 3rd Special Troops Battalion, 3rd Brigade, 101st Airborne Division (April 2011 to November 2012), Current Operations Officer, 3rd Special Troops Battalion, 3rd Brigade, 101st Airborne Division ( November 2012 to July 2013), Executive Officer, Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3rd Brigade, 101st Airborne Division (July 2013 to April 2014), Brigade Engineer, 3rd Brigade, 101st Airborne Division (April 2014 to October 2015), and Deputy S4, Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 130th Engineer Brigade. His operational deployments include Operation Enduring Freedom (2012-2013) where he served as a Sapper Platoon Leader.
Captain Smith is a graduate of the Engineer Basic Officer Leaders Course, and the Aviation Captains Career Course. He holds a Bachelor’s of Science in Business Management from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. He is also a graduate of Airborne school, Air assault School, Eagle Marksmanship course, Unit Movement Officer course, R2C2 Leader course, Sapper Leader course, Rappel Master course, FRIES and SPIES Master course, and Combat life savers course.
His awards and decorations include: The Bronze Star Medal, the meritorious service medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Achievement Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal with Campaign star, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, the Overseas Service Ribbon, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization Medal (ISAF), the Meritorious Unit Commendation, the Army Superior Unit Award (1 oak leaf), the Combat Action Badge, the Sapper Tab, the Airborne Badge, and the Air Assault Badge.
